5-ESS1-2. Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky.
Objective: Students will understand that the Earth’s orbit around the sun causes us to only see certain constellations at certain times. Students will understand the original beginnings of constellations.

Engage: Line up by birthday activity. Marshmallow activity and worksheet with new birthday buddies.
Explore: Along with learning about the stars that make up the constellation, students will draw their constellation on black construction paper. Posters are hung up in order in a circle around a chair representing the sun. Students will rotate through the months to see which constellations they will see in the sky during that month. During this activity, students will fill out a worksheet.
