2-ESS2-2: Develop a model to represent the shapes and kinds of land and bodies of water in an area.
Our Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will have an understanding of the chararcteristics of several landforms and bodies of water. They will also demonstrate their ability to create a model of those landforms and bodies of water.
The 5E's! - Engage The students will be shown a picture of the Earth. We will ask them what they see, what colors they see, what bodies of water or landforms do they see. Then we will go through pictures of several specific landforms and bodies of water and ask them to describe what they see. Then each student will receive a flashcard with a landform or body of water written on it. They will be instructed to type their flashcard on their neighbors back. The students will have 5 to 10 minutes to walk around the classroom asking questions to determine their landform or body of water.
-Explore Then we will go through the landforms and bodies of water on the powerpoint one at a time. Each student will get clay and they will create what they think each landform and body of water should look like.
-Explain We will then present the class with descriptive definitions of each landform and body of water, by having a student read each definition.
-Elaborate Students will be put into 4 groups and will be given a continent and a description of that continent. Then they will take what they've learned about each landform and body of water and use that information to create a model of their continent including at 1 landform and 1 body of water, using clay or paper mache.
-Evaluate Once all the groups have finished constructing their continent with their landforms and bodies of water, they will participate in a gallery walk. One at a time a group is going to describe their process of creating their continent and what bodies of water and landforms they created. While going through each continent, each student will have a handout that has a list of the continents on them. They will then write down what they see in each continent. After the gallery walk is finished all the students will go back to their seats.
